January 17th, 2022 - MLK Day of Service (Part 1)
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 1774 sandwich initiative. I’m sure we can absolutely smash our goal of 1774 sandwiches! We have chosen to do 1774 sandwiches as this was the year Newark Academy was created!
In case you weren’t able to join us this morning and still want to participate, prepare as many meat and cheese sandwiches as you can. I will be at the front entrance tomorrow, so you can drop them off then.
MLK once said, “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.” By making these sandwiches, we target people in our community who are facing food insecurity. Although we are not fixing the problem of food insecurity as a whole, we are starting off at a great place!

January 17th, 2022 - MLK Day of Service (Part 2)
There we have it, the first sandwich collect!
Thank you to everyone who contributed, you guys really made this idea a success.
As a community, we were able to gather and deliver 967 sandwiches! Just think about how many people we fed! It’s amazing the impact of two pieces of bread, some cheese and meat!
Thinking towards our goal, we are almost half way there!
Let’s continue this trend for the rest of the year in hopes of surpassing our initial goal.
Be on the lookout for more sandwiches so we can reach our goal!
February 1st, 2022 - Sandwich Making @ Newark Academy
Join us as we discuss the issue of Food Insecurity and its deep connection to Environmental Justice. While we talk, we will be making sandwiches to be delivered to St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark.
This opportunity is being run by the Do Something Club and led by Leon Sarkissian '25. The goal is to make 1774 sandwiches in honor of the school's founding year. So far we have made 900 sandwiches.
Come help us reach our goal!
February 22nd, 2022 - Sandwich Collect #3
First, I would like to thank everyone who donated to the 1774 Sandwich Collect!
I am proud to announce, that after a very extensive marketing campaign, we absolutely crushed our initial goal. As we collected 903 sandwiches today, we are now at a grand total of 2,148!
Yet again, this is a true testament of the NA community’s kindness and generosity. Rest assured that your contributions during these bitter cold days warm the hearts of many!
April 30th, 2022 - Sandwich Collect #4
Thank you to my NA friends for supporting our 1774 Sandwich Initiative.
In two days, we were able to collect 1,391 sandwiches. This brings our grand total to 3,539!
The next step for this initiative is to have students go to the St. John’s Soup Kitchen on May 14th to see first hand how the kitchen impacts our community.

October 31st, 2022 - Sandwich Collect #5
Thank you to all NA comrades for supporting the 1774 Sandwich Initiative in its second year!
We were all able to assemble 1,111 sandwiches in the cafeteria!
Tomorrow, November 1st, 100 of these sandwiches will be going to Bridges Outreach in Summit NJ for the Teens Tackle Homelessness program. I am glad that Newark Academy was able to make its mark in this event as we will be supplying the sandwiches!
Also, it was halloween today! What a perfect day to collect sandwiches!
PS - I might have to start wearing that sandwich during every collect!
December 1st, 2022 - Sandwich and Coat Collect
What a past few days!
First, we were able to make and deliver 684 sandwiches! This brings our total to over 5,700! 100 of these were donated to Bridges Outreach in Summit. The rest of them went to St. John's Soupkitchen. A big shoutout to Daniel Ikuno for his contagious enthusiasm!
On top of this, we were able to collect over 100 brand new coats thanks to The Knights of Columbus. Some these were distributed with Bridges Outreach in Irvington and others went to The Thirteenth Ave. School. This brings our total of coats to about 250 (some donated before).
These coats will certainly warm the hearts and bodies of many despite these freezing temperatures!
Be on the lookout for our initiative’s one year anniversary on January 17th! We will be going all out! We cannot forget about people in need after the holidays; we must continue!
January 16th, 2023 - MLK Day of Service
Thank you to all the NA students, parents and administrators that came out to support the initiative on its one year anniversary!
We started this initiative exactly one year ago on MLK Day!
Today, we made over 900 sandwiches. This brings our total to about 7,000!
Some of these were delivered to St. Joe’s in Elizabeth. The rest were delivered to St. John’s.
Let’s continue fighting food insecurity in 2023 and beyond!
Lastly, stay tuned for next Sunday. A project that I have been working on will finally be revealed…

On Monday night, LSR joined forces with the 1774 Sandwich Initiative, organized by Leon Sarkissian, to make sandwiches for St. John's Soup Kitchen in Newark. It was an evening of community service and fun! 🥰

This morning LSR delivered a total of 447 sandwiches to St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark through the 1774 Sandwich Initiative. Organized Leon Sarkissian and Daniel Ikuno, it was an evening of fun and community service!
November 30th, 2023 - Speedwell School
It was awesome to deliver over 300 coats this weekend to both the Speedwell School in Newark and Bridges Outreach in Summit.
Throughout the past year, we have developed a great relationship with the Speedwell School. To continue this relationship, Newark Academy students will be tutoring as a part of the Operation Education program.
We look forward to continuing our continued efforts with both coats and sandwiches!!!
February 15th, 2024 - NA Sandwich Collect
Dear NA Comrades,
It is with great pride that I announce that we made and delivered over 930 sandwiches yesterday.
I would like to give a huge thanks to all the MVSMs (Most Valuable Sandwich Makers) who made this event a great success.
Thanks to their “jam-packed” effort, neither the group nor the PB&J sandwiches were “spread thin.” 😂😂😂
Though we were dealing with many loaves, we certainly were NOT LOAFING about. 😭😭😭
As seen in the Excel diagram, we are indeed getting much closer to our goal of 17,740 sandwiches.
I do believe that in 2024, we will be “bread-y” to conquer our goal. 💀💀💀
